Research Blog #15: Abstract and Bibliography

Abstract:

With a growing field of the study on happiness, mostly out of economics, sociology, and psychology, there is plenty of research on the science of happiness. This shows us that people generally believe that meaning and happiness are essential elements of the good life, whereas money is relatively unimportant. With this in mind, you may ask yourself the question of who is happier in the end: students who work hard at their academics throughout college or the students who “have fun” in college and focus more on college life? Some people feel that a person’s successfulness depends on their college experience and how you need to have a good major that will eventually lead to a high paying career. But does money necessarily buy happiness? According to the science of happiness, people do not judge their happiness on material things alone, so income is not a direct measure of happiness. My paper continues to show and defend the reasons behind why money does not measure happiness. There is much more to life. Find something you love and want to do with your life and be happy while you are doing it.

Research Blog #14: My Story

Over the course of the semester my project has evolved a lot. At first, I knew I wanted to do something that had to do with comparing student life to academic life in a college environment. The main reason for this is that I, myself have been struggling to find a good balance between the two. Although I picked that for my topic, it was very vague and I was unsure of how to relate these two lifestyles enough for a whole research paper. Then, my professor suggested I use "happiness" as my topic and relate college to happiness. In the beginning I didn't really think much of it and didn't think I really wanted to go in that direction with my paper, but then I started to research that topic a little bit. Some of the information I found was actually really interesting and that's when I realized that this is what I wanted to base my project on. My main trouble with writing this paper, however, was actually sitting down and focusing on doing my work. There were so many other distractions all the time that made it very hard for me to get things done on time. It even got to the point a few times where I actually did my paper after I thought I might actually fail the course if I didn't keep up. Anyway, with my research topic, there is a debate that essentially money either can buy happiness, or that it can't. Some economists feel that it is more important for students to go to college and focus solely on their academics so that they can later get a good high paying job with a set career, and that will make them happy. But others feel that students should be able to have fun in college and do what they want because "friendship and love is ultimately what trumps money and status" and there is more to life than money. After completing all of my research, I came to the conclusion that it is better for students to "have fun" in college and do what they want. Academics are important, but as long as the student knows what it is that they want to do with their life, they can create a nice balance for themselves between their academic and social lives. This would also decrease a lot of stress on students and make them happier in the end. There’s no point in going through life if you hate what you do, so live your life to the fullest and have fun in doing so.

Research Blog #13: Visual Aids



These images are taken from an old Time magazine in 2005. They show how money doesn’t play a big role in measuring how happy people generally are. The first image depicts how people who range from having a very large income to a very low income are both pretty much the same in how happy they are in life overall. It says that based on their own assessment, Americans are overwhelmingly happy and optimistic people, regardless of income. The second image shows what it is that actually makes us happy. Most people find happiness through family connections and friendships.

Research Blog #12: Outline

Explain the main relationship between college success and happiness
- propose the questions: who is happier in the end: students who work hard at their academics throughout college or the students who “have fun” in college and focus more on college life? and does money essentially buy happiness?

Research Blog #11: The Case

The case for my project is the argument of whether or not money equals happiness because from research i have found, the researchers seem to define happiness as money. Some, like the Kent Swift that i mentioned in my last post, feel that money cannot buy happiness and that it is more of what you do in life and who you do things with throughout your life that makes you happy. They believe that there is much more to life and what makes a person happy other than just some large amount of money. On the other hand, other researchers think that if you don't focus on your academics in college that you will not be happy. The reason for this is that if you don't do well in school then you won't get a good, well paying job in the future where you can make lots of money and in the end that will make you happy. If this were the case for the way you want to live your life, that then it would actually be more self-actualizing for you to study all the time and focusing on your schoolwork. Some ways of socialization may even be against a person's well being, and with this it is more important to them to pay less attention to the college life. From information I have found, there is a lot of research supporting both sides of the argument, ultimately creating one case for my paper.

Research Blog #10: The Debate

The debate I have found with my topic is essentially the question of who is happier in the end: students who work hard at their academics throughout college or the students who have fun in college and focus more on college life. From my research, I have found writers who help to identify with both sides of the debate. Kent Swift, in an article of his, explains how "Folk wisdom proposes that money cannot buy happiness and, thus, suggests that a focus on material success is not the basis for a good life. Rather, a life well-lived would include a focus on such elements as happiness, a sense of purpose, wisdom, creativity, a philosophy of life, achievement, and the experience of love" He says that money isn't everything. Happiness cannot be determined by a certain level of material comfort, like money. But instead, it stems from having meaningful connections with others, and meaningful things to do. Other writers however, in an article titled "Acting for Happiness: Financial Behavior and Life Satisfaction of College Students, the authors tell us how too much focus on money and financial success is likely to lead to lowered happiness because it reduces the time and energy available to pursue more meaningful goals, but that with a good job and good education you will generally be happier with the success you have in life. That in turn leads to overall life satisfaction. There are the two sides of this argument in that money either represents happiness or it doesn't and these writers both defend opposite sides of that.

Research Blog #9: Questions

So far I feel like my paper is going pretty well. I'm not really having any trouble finding sources, although I haven't looked for my primary source yet. My research proposal basically summed up all of my main ideas I want to talk about in my paper except for maybe like you said with the book "Educated in Romance" and how it is a gendered thing that women are more pressured into doing poorly in college because of their attractiveness to men and along with some other factors. I also think I'm still a little confused as to what you mean by "identifying key terms" too.

Research Blog #8: Research Question in Conversation

Why must life be determined by the outcome of college when successfulness doesn't always deliver happiness?

After doing a lot of research and reading through my sources, I have come to find that this would be the best research question for my topic. Some people may say that in order for you to be successful in life you need to do well in college and pick a good major that will then later help you to get a high paying job. But does money necessarily buy happiness? According to the science of happiness, people do not judge their happiness on material things alone, so income is not a direct measure of happiness. While some people may feel as i explained above, others feel that it is better to pick an easier major so they could "have fun" in college and really enjoy the student life; this way they would not have to worry about giving up a great deal in their social life. The debate still stands on whether or not people who party their way through college are happier in the long run than the ones who spend most of their time studying and end up having better, higher paying careers. By using studies of success in college and other studies on happiness, I hope to be able to pick a side and be able to argue and make a case for the value of student life and how just happiness may also be beneficial for the future.

Research Blog #7: Annotated Bibliography

Swift, Kent. Financial Success and the Good Life: What have we Learned from Empirical Studies in Psychology?. 75 Vol. , 2007. Print. Swift, a professor in the College of Business Sciences at Zayed University, has been teaching business at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and has also published articles on a variety of business topics. In this paper, he suggests that instead of counting your money that you should count your friends, and that will tell you how good your life is. He says that you should be thankful for what you have, and do something that makes you happy, because money isn’t everything.

Xiao, Jing Jian, Chuanyi Tang, and Soyeon Shim. Acting for Happiness: Financial Behavior and Life Satisfaction of College Students. 92 Vol. , 2009. Print. The authors of this article have brought up their own study on the relationship between financial behavior and life satisfaction. Using data that they have collected, they came up with the conclusion that financial behaviors broadly may influence not only financial satisfaction but also academic performance and satisfaction. They say that the magnitude of financial behaviors’ overall impact on student’s life satisfaction is equal to or close to the magnitude of the impact that academic satisfaction has on overall life satisfaction.

Research Blog #4: Rutgers RIOT

The Rutgers RIOT reinforces everything that the librarian taught us in class on Monday. It is very helpful in that it teaches you the basics of the beginning of writing a research paper. First, you need to select a good topic using limiters like time, geography, and population so that it is not too broad of a topic. Then you need to find sources by entering the correct keywords in the databases that the Rutgers libraries have. This tutorial also helps you to identify your citations as a book or journal, and you get some practice with evaluating the quality of your sources and learning if they are too old or not by an acceptable author for the topic you chose. One big thing I learned was that the libraries and their databases are a lot easier to use and a lot better than other search engines like google or yahoo when you are searching for information for a research paper. Rutgers RIOT is a very well put together interactive tutorial for teaching necessary research skills. The way they teach you is good in that you can actually answer some questions along the way and really get engaged in the tutorial. To improve it, however, they could maybe make it necessary for you to answer the questions correctly before moving on.

Research Blog #3: Questions for the Librarian

1) I have never been to the library here other than to just print things out from the computers so I am not sure of all that the library has to offer. How would I go about checking out a book? Is there a standard fee I need to pay or do I just use my Rutgers ID card? How long can I have a book out for? How would I search to find the specific books, articles, etc. that i need to further my research?

2) Where could I find any information on academics vs. college life? Do you know of any articles or anything that argues how academics play a much larger role than does college/student life in terms of what people wind up doing with the rest of their lives?

3) Where could I find information and statistics on the cost of higher education?

Research Blog #2: Scouting the Territory

For my topic, I still would like to write about students' social life vs. academic life. However, as you commented on my last post that "there is no possible equilibrium: your future (and the good of society perhaps) depends on success in academics, and 'student life' is openly antagonistic to that success," i'm not sure where I stand on that. College life and living in a dorm, all on your own away from your parents and everyone else from back home, teaches you a lot. You learn to be more independent, to do your own laundry, to make yourself food (when you aren't just going to the dining hall), good time management, and most importantly to be more sociable. With how society is today, in order for you to go far in the working world you need to be social with others and voice you're opinion to get what you want. If you go through life being very quiet and not speaking up for yourself, you won't really get anywhere. Although academics plays a huge role in determing your future, the social aspect is very important too. If it weren't for this college life, I feel that it would make things so much harder for a lot of people when they get out into the "real world." I also looked up the book "Stumbling on Happiness" by Daniel Gilbert like you suggested, and he makes some interesting points, but I'm not exactly sure how this goes along with my feelings toward students in college.

Research Blog #1: Initial Topic Idea

As I was looking through all of the different topics for the 201 course, this one with the title of "College!" had definitely caught my attention. I was debating between a couple of the courses but for some reason this one just stood out, besides for the fact that it was the only topic ending with an exclamation point. Anyway, I decided to sign up for it because I feel that by being in college myself, it makes it that much easier to relate to this topic. However, going into the first day of class I honestly had no idea what to expect. I knew we would be writing a research paper about college but just within that itself there are so many different topics that it makes it difficult to just pick one thing to write a research paper on. As we discussed the course in class along with some possible research topics, I found one topic that was mentioned to be very interesting. The balance between a good social life and a good academic life. I'm not exactly sure how I would go about writing a paper on this but I think it would be cool to research it. I myself am finding it difficult to do really well and keep up with all of my classes while also spending enough time experiencing the college life, and I think a good amount of college students are in the same position as me in this particular situation. Whether it is your friends or classmates pressuring you to go out at nights or on weekends to hangout with them, or your parents at home pressuring you to do really well in your classes, or even just your own views on college and how you feel you should spend your time there, I feel that many students are stuck in a rut trying to deal with both of the two worlds.
